Frequently Asked Questions

What is the intake process?

The counsellor will arrange to have a brief phone call with you. If you choose to engage you will be emailed an online intake form (no printing required) to be completed prior to the first counselling session.

What is confidentiality?

As a member of the ACA, the counsellor adheres to the ACA Code of ethic around confidentiality. Confidentiality is assured, except in the following situations where disclosure is legally or ethically required:

·      If you disclose intent to harm yourself or others

·      If there is suspicion or disclosure of child abuse, elder abuse, or neglect (mandatory reporting laws apply)

·      If a court subpoenas session records

·      Counsellors may also seek supervision (without revealing your identity) to ensure the best therapeutic practice.

·      Reports for Victim Services /to request more hours

How many sessions will I need?

The length of the counselling process can vary and will depend on the concern or your counselling goals. Counselling does not have to be a long-term undertaking, and instead a specific intervention for a specific concern. The frequency of sessions will be discussed to tailor your needs and availability, be it weekly, fortnightly or other options as suitable.

What is the cancellation policy?

Time is precious and at the same time we understand that sometimes cancelling a session is unavoidable. We kindly request a notification of 24 hours in order to prevent a cancellation fee, so that we may fill your vacancy.

How does the counselling process end?

The decision to terminate counselling can be determined by both the client and the counsellor. As the counselling process draws to an end, a plan can be established prior to the final session. A client is free to terminate the counselling process at any time. It is recommended that the client and counsellor discuss other options.

What is the difference between a Counsellor and a Psychologist?

The core difference lies in their qualifications and scope of practice. Psychologists are trained to formally diagnose and treat complex mental health conditions. Counsellors primarily provide person-centred therapy, focusing on emotional well-being, life transitions, and everyday coping strategies without offering formal diagnoses.

A quick breakdown to help you decide which is right for you:

Psychologist

  • Best for: Ongoing, complex, or severe mental health conditions

  • Qualifications:  University training plus supervised practice. In Australia, they are registered with AHPRA.

  • Services: Provide diagnostic assessments (including cognitive or ADHD assessments), clinical evaluations, and structured, evidence-based treatments.

  • Rebates: Under the Medicare Better Access initiative, you can claim significant rebates for up to 10 sessions per calendar year if you have a GP referral and a Mental Health Care Plan.

Counsellor

  • Best for: Everyday emotional support, grief, relationship conflicts, stress management, or navigating major life changes.

  • Qualifications: Requirements can vary, but reputable practitioners usually hold a Diploma or Master's degree and are registered with peak bodies like PACFA or the ACA.

  • Services: Offers goal-oriented, practical guidance and help build everyday coping strategies.

  • Rebates: Sessions are typically privately funded, though some private health insurers offer partial coverage.
